Landscaping isn’t cheap, and we want our customers to have more money to spend on new landscaping projects, rather than having to dump money into something that they could have saved on if they had done things a little different or in a different order.

In no particular order, here are some tips that will save you thousands of dollars on your landscaping!

New Construction

If you ever plan of burying your downspouts, make sure to tell your concrete company put 4 inch drain tile (black corrugated pipe) under sidewalks or any other concrete surface that might get in the way of trenching. It doesn’t take much more of their time to do this, but it saves you from paying hours of labor for landscape crews to bore under the concrete with water.

If you are planning on EVER installing an irrigation system, make sure to let your plumber or builder know this so that they can install a larger pump and service line, as well as the basic plumbing to the outside of the house.
If your home is going to be built on a slope, you may get the surprise of having to install a retaining wall, which can cost multiple thousands of dollars. If your house is being built a slope, or if you are going to have a walk-out basement, you will probably need a retaining wall and a lot of the time this cost isn’t in the price of the house. Weeds can add thousands of dollars to the cost of your lawn installation. There is no real efficient way of getting rid of them once they start growing. It is best to make sure that your excavator clears the weeds during the final grade of all areas that you are going to want grass planted or sod installed. After the final grade is completed, make sure that you are on a landscaper’s schedule to get your lawn installed right away. Even waiting a few weeks can cause weed growth that increases the cost of your lawn installation exponentially.
If you are putting a deck in and don’t want weeds growing underneath, you are probably going to want to have landscape fabric and rock installed. Make sure to call us to spread the rock and fabric before they come out to put the deck up. We can do the rock spreading with a tractor if you hire us to come in before the deck construction crew.

To make sure that you have the correct amount budgeted for landscaping services after your home is built, it is best to meet with a landscaper to discuss your future plans ahead of time. If you haven’t already spoken with a bank and made building allowances, there may be some landscape elements that you can have included in your mortgage payment.
Have a master landscape plan and stick to it. Lets face it, there are a lot of plants out there to choose from, and unless it is your hobby or profession to know plant material, you probably don’t know a whole lot about what looks good and where it should go in a landscape. Landscape designs are relatively inexpensive with our company. This is because we believe that our customers need a solid plan.
Ask us what work you can do yourself to save some money. There are lots of small things you can do throughout a landscape project that you can do just as easily as we can. For example, if you are having the landscape beds with plants installed around your house with rock and plastic edging, we would recommend that you hire us to perform the labor intensive tasks of cutting the sod where the landscaping is to be installed, trenching and installing the plastic edging, and spreading the rock. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars in labor by installing the plant material yourself and laying the landscape fabric down that goes underneath the rock!
